Batavia, New York, in Genesee county, is 28 miles E of Amherst, New York and 35 miles E of Buffalo, New York. The city is in the Rochester area. There are 16,256 residents in Batavia.

Batavia History

The Holland Land Company purchased the land now known as Batavia City in 1792. The Dutch named the place after the Batavian Republic in the Netherlands. Joseph Ellicott, an agent of the Holland Land Company, built a land office in Batavia in 1801. Batavia became the county seat of the newly formed Genesee County in 1802. It was incorporated as a village in 1823 and reincorporated as a city in 1915.
