Bay Shore History
Bay Shore was originally known as Penataquit and was inhabited by Native Americans. Sagtikos Manor, the oldest structure of the town, was built in 1692 by Stephanus Van Cortlandt. It served as the headquarters for the British forces during the American Revolution. It was also used as a stopover by George Washington during his tour of Long Island in 1790. Bay Shore became famous for its shopping district and resorts during the late 19th century.
