Canandaigua, New York, in Ontario county, is 25 miles SE of Rochester, New York and 80 miles E of Buffalo, New York. The city is considered part of the Rochester metropolitan area. Canandaigua has a population of 11,264.

Canandaigua History

The area which is occupied by the present day city of Canandaigua was originally the site of the chief village of the Seneca. The Treaty of Canandaigua was signed in November, 1794, to broker peace between the U.S. and the Six Nations of the Iroquois. The Village of Canandaigua was incorporated in 1815, and achieved cityhood in 1913. Jessie Hawley, who was a major influence behind the construction of the Erie Canal, spent around 20 months in Canandaigua debtors' prison. During this period, he wrote and published 14 influential essays on the building of the canal.
