Carmel History

George Hughson, the earliest European settler in this area, arrived in 1740. Carmel was originally founded as the Town of Kent in 1795. It was declared a county seat in 1812. The Carmel County Courthouse was constructed in 1814, while the Carmel High School was built in 1929.

Things To Do In Carmel

The Centennial Golf Club, a 27-hole championship golf course, occupies an area of 340 acres and provides memorable playing opportunities to golfers. Lake Gleneida is also a popular tourist spot. It is spread over 168 acres and was formed by ice age glaciers. The Putnam County Park has a lake, camp grounds and hiking trails.
