Copiague, New York, in Suffolk county, is 6 miles SE of Levittown, New York and 30 miles E of New York, New York. The town is conveniently located inside the Nassau - Suffolk metropolitan area. There are an estimated 21,922 people in Copiague.

Copiague History

Copiague was once occupied by the Massapequa Indians. Settlers from Huntington purchased land from local tribes in 1657. The area was known as Copyag in 1693, and Cuppuauge in 1698. It was renamed to Great Neck in the mid 1800s. The area adopted its present name in 1895. The name Copiague was derived from an Indian term meaning "sheltered harbor." The first post office in Copiague was established in 1803.
