Deer Park History

Deer Park was first settled in by Europeans in 1666 by Jacob Conklin. The area was named because of the abundance of deer in the area. The economic development of the area largely depended upon farming. It is also famous for its dahlia cultivation and is known as the 'fruit basket' of New York State. A railroad first entered the area in 1842, and the first post office in Deer Park was established in 1851. Deer Park was the summer spot of President John Quincy Adams.
