East Rockaway, New York, in Nassau county, is 5 miles SW of Hempstead, New York and 17 miles E of New York, New York. The village is conveniently located inside the Nassau - Suffolk metropolitan area. There are an estimated 10,414 people in East Rockaway.
East Rockaway History
East Rockaway was originally known as Near Rockaway. Because of its proximity to deep inland channels, the town was suitable for ships and started as a center for shipping and trading. Joseph Havilland built the first grist mill in the area in 1688. The present name, East Rockaway, was adopted by the village in 1869. It was officially incorporated in 1900 with a population of 969.
