Elwood, New York, in Suffolk county, is 6 miles NW of Brentwood, New York and 34 miles E of New York, New York. The town is considered part of the Nassau - Suffolk metropolitan area. Elwood has a population of 10,916.

Elwood History

Elwood is a census-designated hamlet and is a part of the Town of Huntington, which was incorporated on November 30, 1666. There are more than 12 unincorporated hamlets and 4 incorporated villages within the Town of Huntington. Elwood is also known as “The Heart of Huntington.” Most of the early settlers of the area were English people who came from Massachusetts and Connecticut. It was first settled in by Europeans in the mid 1600s.
