Freeport, New York, in Nassau county, is 3 miles SE of Hempstead, New York and 21 miles E of New York, New York. The people of the village are in the Nassau - Suffolk metropolitan area. Freeport has a population of 43,783.

Freeport History

The area now known as Freeport was originally occupied by the Meroke Indians. The village adopted its present name in 1853. This name was chosen becuase the port did not charge customs fees to ships during the colonial days. Freeport became a center for commercial oystering after the Civil War. The village was incorporated in 1892 and a municipal electric utility was established in 1898.
