Grand Island History

When French explorers visited this area during the 16th century, they found that it was inhabited by Neutral Native Americans. The Seneca Indians destroyed this tribe in the mid17th century and used the land for fishing and hunting. In 1815, Grand Island was purchased by New York State along with other small islands in the Niagara River. Grand Island was formally established as a town in 1852.

Things To Do In Grand Island

Beaver Island State Park has a marina, swimming beach, picnic areas, nature trails and children’s playgrounds. The town also has a rifle range, archery range & trap and a skeet range. The 85-acre Martin’s Fantasy Island is a popular local amusement park. The Erie County Botanical Gardens, Niagara Falls, the Buffalo Zoo and the Aquarium of Niagara are all accessible from Grand Island as well.
