Irondequoit History
Irondequoit derived its name from an Iroquoian term meaning ‘bay.' Marquis de Denonville led an army against the Iroquois in 1687, beginning a the long conflict between the French and the tribe. The area became a part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase after the American Revolution. The town was established in 1839. It was developed as vacation area for the residents of the City of Rochester in the late 19th century. Irondequoit was once referred to as the Coney Island of Western New York.
