Islip, New York, in Suffolk county, is 4 miles SE of Brentwood, New York and 40 miles E of New York, New York. Part of the surrounding Nassau - Suffolk metro area, Islip is home to some 20,575 residents.

Islip History

The present day Town of Islip was originally inhabited by Algonquin Native Americans. William Nicoll purchased the land from Sachem Winnequaheagh on November 29, 1683 and named his plantation Islip Grange after Islip, England. The district of Islip was established in 1710. It became a town in 1790. The area became a vacation spot for wealthy tourists from New York City at one time. Numerous lodges, mansions and country clubs were established in the town. The Long Island Railroad entered the town in 1844.

The Adventureland Amusement Park, the Maritime Aquarium at Norwalk and the Wildlife and Ecology Center at Holtsville are all popular local recreational spots as well.
