Jamestown, New York, in Chautauqua county, is 43 miles E of Erie, Pennsylvania and 57 miles S of Buffalo, New York. As of the year 2000 census, 31,730 people lived in Jamestown.

Jamestown History

The earliest European settler of the present day city of Jamestown was James Prendergast. He purchased around 3,500 acres of land in the area of Chautauqua County in 1806. It went on to be incorporated as a village in 1827, and as a city in 1886. There are two theories behind the naming of this community. According to one, it was named after its founder, James Prendergast. There are some people who believe that it was named after Jamestown, VA, however.
