Merrick, New York, in Nassau county, is 4 miles SE of Hempstead, New York and 23 miles E of New York, New York. The town is included in the Nassau - Suffolk metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 22,764 people lived in Merrick.

Merrick History

Merrick was originally inhabited by the Meroke Indians. In fact, it derived its name from an Indian term meaning "barren land." The area was first settled in by the English in 1643. It became a trading center during the colonial period. The construction of the South Shore Railroad in the late 1880s had a tremendous influence on the development of the area. The population of Merrick boomed after World War II.
