Middle Island History

The history of the community began in 1766, when the first Presbyterian Church was constructed and Rev. David Rose served as pastor. In the same year, a cemetery was built and in 1813, the first schoolhouse was established. Pfeiffer's Store, a typical country store that served the area for more than 100 years, was the center of social activity during those years. Alonzo Chappel settled near the Corwin's Pond in 1869, and the lake was thereafter named "Artist Lake". The community was christened "Middle Island" because of its location between the Eastern and Western boundaries of Long Island, as well as the Northern and Southern ends. It is now a part of the Town of Brookhaven.
