Mount Vernon History

In 1850, a merchant tailor from New York City by the name of John Stevens set out to create a property that would help improve the condition of the working class in the city. To this end, he founded the Industrial Home Association No. 1 of New York which enrolled 1,017 due-paying members. This land went on to become the Village of Mount Vernon. It was then a part of the Town of Eastchester. The community was named after George Washington's estate in Virginia.

The Saint Paul's Church National Historic Site houses a church that was founded in 1665. The Bartow-Pell Mansion and Dyckman House are also within 5 miles of the city. In addition, one can visit the Bronx County Historical Society, City Island Nautical Museum, Hudson River Museum of Westchester and the Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site from Mount Vernon. The Bronx Zoo, George Washington Bridge and the New York Botanical Garden are ideal destinations for a day trip with family and friends.
