Newburgh, New York

Introduction to Newburgh, New York

Newburgh is situated along the west bank of the Hudson River in Orange County. The Town of Newburgh is located nearby. The municipality is known for its numerous historical and architectural landmarks. In 2004 the state of New York regarded it as one of the five most stressed cities in the state, based on factors such as households headed by single mothers, unemployment, poverty, abandoned buildings and adults without a high school diploma.

History

In 1609 Henry Hudson and his party were the first Europeans to explore the region. The first settlement was established in 1709 by a group of German Lutherans, however, by 1750 the community was primarily filled with people of English and Scottish ancestry. In 1752 the community took the name Parish of Newburgh in tribute to Newburgh, Scotland. For a short time, the town had been the headquarters for the Continental Army. Several of the local army officers were involved in the "Newburgh Conspiracy." Their goal was to overthrow the government, however, George Washington was able to convince his army officers to stay dedicated to him.

The city was chartered in 1865. Newburgh became wealthy during the "Gilded Age." It became a major transportation and industrial center due to being well positioned between New York City and Albany. The first Edison power plant in the country was constructed in Newburgh. It was the first city in the nation to be electrified. The significant economic decline during the late 20th Century was primarily due to the industrial companies relocating to other cities.
