North Merrick History
North Merrick is a census designated place in Nassau County. It was originally inhabited by Native Americans and the area was named after an Indian tribe. The community is located within the Town of Hempstead, which was first settled in by Europeans in 1644. The early settlers were mostly from the English colony of Connecticut. Hempstead includes over 20 incorporated villages and around 35 unincorporated hamlets.
