North Tonawanda History

The area now known as the city of North Tonawanda was originally a part of the city of Tonawanda. In 1897, it was incorporated as a separate city. It was named after Tonawanda creek, which once flowed past the city. The economic development of the city was largely dependant upon its lumber industries, and North Tonawanda was also known as the ‘The Lumber City.' It is also the birthplace of the Herschell-Spillman Company, which is one of the top manufacturers of carousels in the United States.
