Olean, New York, in Cattaraugus county, is 59 miles S of Cheektowaga, New York and 60 miles SE of Buffalo, New York. The city has a population of 15,347.

Olean History

The present day City of Olean was first settled in in 1765. It was named after Olean Shephard, the first white child born in the area. The post office was originally named Olean Point. In 1823, the name was simplified to Olean. It was incorporated as a city in 1854. Petroleum was found in the area in the 1820s. The discovery of oil in 1874 played a significant role in the development of the city.
