Plainview History

Plainview's origin dates back to 1695, when Robert Williams purchased land in this area. Its earliest settlers named it Manetto Hill. This was inspired by the Native American word for "God." Residents petitioned for a local post office in 1885, but they were turned down by the United States Postal Service because the name of the town was already in use. The residents then renamed the town Plainview, in reference to the "plain-view" of Hempstead Plains that was visible from the top of Manetto Hill.
