Ridge, New York, in Suffolk county, is 19 miles NE of Brentwood, New York and 57 miles E of New York, New York. Part of the surrounding Nassau- Suffolk metro area, Ridge is home to some 13,380 residents.
Ridge History
Ridge's history dates back to 1693, when William “Tangier” Smith purchased a large plot on the southern shore of Long Island. The plot was called St. George’s Manor. The southern area of Ridge was once known as Longswamp. William Sydney Smith lived in the first house that was built in Longswamp and renamed the area Longwood. The northern part of Ridge was settled in by Samuel Randall. It was initially called Randalville, but later renamed Ridge to facilitate postal delivery.

There are huge expanses of rich parkland around Ridge. People have access to well maintained parks and forest preserves with nature trails that provide opportunities for hiking through scenic areas. The Wildwood State Park, which is in the neighborhood, has over 600 acres of undeveloped forestland. It includes a beach and has picnic and camping areas, trails and facilities for fishing, as well as a playground. The waterfront provides opportunities for swimming, fishing and boating.
