Introduction to Rockville Centre, New York
Rockville Centre, New York, in Nassau county, is 3 miles S of Hempstead, New York and 18 miles E of New York, New York. The village is included in the Nassau- Suffolk metropolitan area. As of the year 2000 census, 24,568 people lived in Rockville Centre.
Rockville Centre History
The Village of Rockville Centre was incorporated on July 15, 1893. It was named after community leader and Methodist preacher Mordecai Rock Smith. The first railroad entered the village in 1867 and the first public library was established in 1882. The first high school of South Shore was also built in Rockville Centre in 1892. The Bank of Rockville Centre, which was founded in February 1891, was the first commercial bank that operated on the south shore of Long Island.
