Rome, New York, in Oneida county, is 13 miles NW of Utica, New York and 174 miles E of Buffalo, New York. The city is considered part of the Utica- Rome metropolitan area. Rome has a population of 34,950.

Rome History

The area now known as the City of Rome was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Throughout its history, the city has enjoyed a great strategic and commercial significance, primarily because of its location along an ancient trade route. Brass and copper works were founded in the city in 1801 by Paul Revere. The nation's first cheese factory was also established in Rome in 1851. It was incorporated as a city in 1870. The area was named after the classical city of Rome in Italy.
