City History

Shirley is a census–designated hamlet located in the Town of Brookhaven, which was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Native Americans. Brookhaven was first settled in by English settlers in 1655 and was incorporated in 1686. Shirley was named after its developer, Walter T. Shirley.
