Sound Beach, New York, in Suffolk county, is 18 miles NE of Brentwood, New York (center to center) and 55 miles E of New York, New York. The town has some 9,807 residents.

Sound Beach History

The community of Sound Beach was established in the 1920s. The New York Daily Mirror sold lots to middle income residents of New York City. Initially, large tents were erected which eventually gave way to small cottages. For almost 40 years after it was established, the community remained a summer resort. People of German, Italian, and Irish descent came here during the summer months. However, in current years, Sound Beach has developed into a year-round community. It is a part of the Town of Brookhaven.

Things To Do In Sound Beach

The Long Island Museum, which is within 10 miles of Sound Beach, is situated upon 9 acres and features history, art, and carriage museums. The Bellport-Brookhaven Historical Society Museum, the Garbage Museum, and BNL Science Museum are also close by. Sagamore Hill National Historic Site, Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Park, Weir Farm National Historic Site, Eli Whitney Gun Factory, and Marshall Field III estate are sites of historic importance in the area. Fire Island National Seashore, situated between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great South Bay, is a popular destination that includes 32 miles of beach, nature trails, and public marinas. Fishing, picnicking, biking, boating, horseback riding, and hiking can be enjoyed at the Belmont Lake State Park, Sherwood Island State Park, and Heckscher State Park. Atlantis Marine World Aquarium, and Beardsley Zoological Gardens are other popular attractions in the region.
