St. James History

St. James is an unincorporated community in the Town of Smithtown, which was first settled in by Europeans in 1665. The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans. Smithtown includes around 3 incorporated villages and over 6 unincorporated hamlets. St. James became a popular vacation spot in the early 20th century. It is home to the St. James General Store, which is the oldest general store in the nation. The store continues to operate to this day.
