Syosset History

Syosset is a census designated hamlet located in the Town of Oyster Bay. Syosset derived its name from an Indian term meaning "place in the pines." The first railroad entered the area around 1854. This enabled many wealthy residents from New York City to build estates in the hamlet. Until World War II, Syosset was primarily a farming community.
