Tonawanda, New York, in Erie county, is 6 miles W of Amherst, New York and 9 miles N of Buffalo, New York. The city is conveniently located inside the Buffalo- Niagara Falls metropolitan area. There are an estimated 16,136 people in Tonawanda.

Tonawanda History

Henry Anguish was the first European settler in Tonawanda. He built a log house for himself in 1808, followed by a tavern in 1811. Growth was slow until the Erie Canal opened in 1825. The two Tonawandas located on either side of the Tonawanda Creek got excellent economic opportunity from the lumber industry and went on to become leaders in lumber processing in the late 19th century. Tonawanda eventually achieved cityhood in 1904.
