Watertown, New York, in Jefferson county, is 65 miles N of Syracuse, New York and 167 miles NE of Buffalo, New York. As of the year 2000 census, 26,705 people lived in Watertown.

Watertown History

In 1800, pioneers from New Hampshire settled in the area that is presently known as Watertown. They selected in this area because of its proximity to the Black River. They had envisioned developing an industrial center that could be powered by the Black River. By the middle of the 19th century, the area had some major industries, including many paper mills. Watertown went on to be incorporated as a village in 1816 and as a city in 1869.

Watertown is home to several architecturally significant buildings. One of them is the Jefferson County Courthouse, which is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Along with its rich architectural heritage, the city has a compact and walkable retail area. The neighborhood also has a couple of standard golf courses.
