West Islip, New York is 6 miles SW of Brentwood, New York and 35 miles E of New York, New York. It is in Suffolk county. The town is part of the Nassau- Suffolk metro area. The population of West Islip is 28,907.
West Islip History
West Islip is a census-designated area that lies towards the southwest portion of the Town of Islip. The first European settlers in the area were the Dutch. In 1624, they established a trading-post at Manhattan Island. In fact, one can still find evidence of a Dutch settlement dating back to 1625, towards the extreme western part of Long Island.

At the Fire Island National Seashore, one can see high dunes, rhythmic waves, historic landmarks, ancient maritime forests and wildlife. The area has been home to diverse animals, plants and people for many centuries. The Robert Moses State Park has a five mile-long beach overlooking the ocean. People visit the park to enjoy fishing or swimming. Anglers are allowed to fish from piers. The park also has an 18-hole pitch and putt golf course and picnic areas.
