Woodmere History

Woodmere is a census-designated hamlet. The community was named in honor of landholder Samuel Wood. It was once known as Woodsburgh. Woodmere is a part of the Five Towns community in Long Island. This community comprises of the villages of Cedarhurst and Lawrence, the hamlets of Inwood and Woodmere, and "The Hewletts," which consist of the villages of Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Bay Park and Hewlett Neck, as well as the hamlet of Hewlett and Woodsburgh.

Things To Do In Woodmere

While in Woodmere, one can visit the Rock Hall Museum, a pre-Revolutionary War home. This museum now showcases displays of artifacts from the 18th century. The African American Museum, Fine Arts Museum of Long Island, Queens County Farm Museum and the Long Island Children's Museum are also nearby. The early 20th century home of John S. Phipps, now known as Old Westbury Gardens, has beautifully landscaped lands that make the house a popular local spot. In addition, the Belmont Park race track, Queens Botanical Garden and the Queens Zoo are close to the town.
